A team on engineering students at Clemson University’s International Centre For Vehicle Research (CU-ICAR), in partnership with Mini Cooper, recently released their concept for the Deep Orange 7. The vehicle is intended to showcase their vision of the future of compact, practical car design. Although the Deep Orange is a human-driven car with no emphasis on automated technologies, the team has introduced several other interesting futuristic elements to their design, including a digital ‘paint’ which would be able to change colour and darken windows for privacy, and a holographic AI assistant.

2. Tesla Model 3

After years of turning out tech-heavy, high-end vehicles, Tesla is trying their hand at mid-range car design with the Model 3. The car is intended to debut as a two-wheel-drive, with a 355km range and 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds. Unlike the Model S and X, the 3 will feature coil-suspension rather than air, and an iPad like digital display taking the plave of the usual buttons and dials. The first Model 3’s are expected to arrive in Australia in 2019, for a starting price of $50,000.

According to Audi, the car is designed to reach a range of 435 miles, and features four electric motors- one over each wheel- producing a combined total of 405 pound-feet of torque. The Aicon also features wireless charging capability, which allows for a faster charging time. The battery can apparently be charged to 80% in half an hour.

Yet another concept unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, the Renault Symbioz is intended to function seamlessly as an extension of the home. It features an automatic mode in which the front seats swivel a full 180 degrees to create a comfortable ‘mobile lounge’, and would also be able to function as a power backup for the home during peak electricity hours or blackouts. According to Renault Executive Vice President, Thierry Bollore, the car “represents an interactive and personalised space that connects passengers to other cars, people and objects around them.”
